Banish Blue Monday blues with these simple tips

Blue Monday is BS and notttt the vibe around here!

For the past twenty one years, the third Monday in January, has been dubbed “Blue Monday,” allegedly the most depressing day of the year thanks to low daylight, poor weather, debt levels post-Christmas, time until payday, and general low motivation.

What started as a marketing tactic by Sky Travel has now become a widely accepted concept, especially here in the UK.

Here’s the thing: our minds are far more powerful than we realise. In the first and last hours of the day, we enter a Theta state, a form of relaxed awareness where we process emotions, make sense of the world, and plan. During this time, our minds are like sponges, absorbing everything around us. So, if the first thing we hear upon waking is that this day will be depressing, guess what? That’s exactly the story our minds will play out.

But here’s the good news: we can choose a different story. Our subconscious mind, which governs 90% of our brain’s activity and is 1 million times more powerful than our conscious thoughts, doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what we tell it. What we believe and repeat to ourselves is what we start to manifest.

Interestingly, the mind struggles to process certain words, and the most important of these is “not.” For instance, if you say, “I will not be sad today,” your mind will actually hear, “I will be sad today.” Instead, reframe your thoughts in the positive: “I choose to be happy and energetic today.”

So, here’s the key takeaway: avoid starting your day by ingesting negativity—whether from your newsfeed, social media, or the media narrative around “Blue Monday.” The words you consume shape your mindset. If you fill your mind with negativity, you’re more likely to see and feel negativity.

Want to sidestep the supposed misery of Blue Monday?

Here are some practical tips to shift your mindset:

  1. Set the tone before bed: Choose to feel good as you wind down for the night. Use positive affirmations like: “I choose to feel strong, energetic, and happy when I wake tomorrow.”
  2. Start the day with intent: Don’t hit snooze repeatedly. Wake up with purpose and tell yourself “today is a good day to have a good day.”
  3. Focus on the positive: As you review your to-do list, approach it with excitement and gratitude. Celebrate the opportunity to accomplish something meaningful.
  4. Look for the good. If you look for the good in your day, you will start to subconsciously train your mind to automatically look for more good.
  5. Be mindful what enters your mind. If you feel down after speaking to certain people, engaging with certain content or discussing certain things, limit these where you are able. Protect your mind and all that goes in to it. Fill it with goodness.

Remember, how you frame the day and what you tell yourself can make all the difference. By consciously choosing a positive mindset, you can turn what’s labeled as “Blue Monday” into an opportunity for growth, joy, and success.
